More From The Giant Duck

duck LA

Dutch artist Florentijn Hofman’s six-story-tall bathtub toy proved very popular in Los Angeles— thousands were drawn to the waterfront to see it! It was so popular that it stayed an extra week (until Sept. 6). It was in the Los Angeles harbor making a special guest appearance at the Tall Ships Festival. Wonder where it will migrate next? Stay tuned!

Starting 2014 off with a BANG!

duck explosion

THAR SHE BLOWS! Since 2007 this original GIGANTIC rubber duck created by Dutch artist Florentijn Hofman has travelled to 13 cities in nine countries, including Brazil, Australia and Hong Kong, on its journey around the world. The giant, inflatable yellow duck that was on display in a northern Taiwan port exploded just hours before it was to feature in New Year’s Eve celebrations. It was the second time a giant inflatable duck had burst while on show in Taiwan. The cause of the deflation, which was caught on film, is a mystery. However, one theory is that it was attacked by eagles.

Rubber Duckie Inducted into the Toy Hall of Fame!

This just in!!!! Rubber duckie was inducted into the National Toy Hall of Fame! The National Toy Hall of Fame recognizes toys “that have inspired creative play and enjoyed popularity over a sustained period.” The institution announced 12 finalist last month and yesterday it announced two winners. The chess game……and you guessed it….Rubber duckie!!!

Rubber duck and chess squeaked and check mated past ten other finalists, including Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Pac-Man and My Little Pony to win this year’s honor.

Toys previously inducted into the Hall of Fame include Monopoly (1998), roller Skates (1999), jack-in-the-box (2005) and last year’s inductees: Star Wars action figures and dominoes.

Rubber ducks have been recognized as the quintessential bathtub toy since 1970 when Ernie, the cheerful orange Muppet on Sesame Street, first sang the catchy ditty “Rubber Duckie” to his best bath buddy. The song rose to number 16 on Billboard’s chart of hit tunes and, decades later, kids still sing the praises of their water play pals. Adults, too, appreciate rubber ducks. Collectors proudly display variations of the classic form that proclaim their affinity to colleges, careers, sports, celebrities, and holidays. Aficionados adorn their homes with rubber duck–themed shower curtains, towels, bathrobes, nightlights, and wallpaper. “Rubber Duckie, you’re the one,” indeed!

Pittsburgh is Just Duckie!

Behold! The large rubber duck has made it’s way to Pittsburgh! It is the first U.S. version of the 40-foot-tall rubber duckie that’s made a splash in harbors from Hong Kong to Sao Paulo since 2007.

Giant duck

Each city builds its own duck from the plans of Dutch artist Florentijn Hofman, and the whole project includes massive pontoons, crews to inflate and deflate the duck, and in this case, alerting organizations such as the Coast Guard and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

Mariners were alerted to the duck’s impending presence, Coast Guard Lt. JG Devin Adams said, because the shipping channel of the Ohio River is one of the nation’s busiest commercial waterways.

“Our job at that point is to alert the maritime community … that there’s going to be a duck there,” Adams said, stifling a chuckle.

Hofman has said the duck has “healing properties” because it knows no frontiers, doesn’t discriminate and doesn’t have a political connotation.

The duck’s arrival (last Friday) kicked off a month long Pittsburgh International Festival of Firsts, which features theater, dance, music and visual arts from around the world. The duck will be moored  downtown until late October.

As part of the celebration, Pittsburgh’s Museum of Cartoon Art is transforming Pittsburgh into Duckburg with its newest exhibition “Duck!” It runs Sept. 27-Oct. 20, at 945 Liberty Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA. It will feature CelebriDucks, which includes Devo Duck, of course! It’s definitely something to see if you live in the Pittsburgh area!

Just this past weekend, a rubber duck event of great proportions was held deep in the heart of Texas! The 2nd annual Rockwall Rubber Duck Regatta in Rockwall, Texas was held as a fundraiser benefiting the Boys & Girls Club of Rockwall County and Meals on Wheels of Rockwall County! Thousands of spectators watched 5,000 rubber ducks splash into the fountain at the Harbor in Rockwall and race down towards the finish line. Here are some pictures taken from the race just last weekend! The ducks all began at the top of the triple decker fountain and raced down to the finish line!

The End

There was also a uniquie “duck pageant!” Sponsored by businesses, organizations, and individuals, these ducks were decorated by their owners, then put on display and judged at the Harbor on race day prior to the Corporate Duck Race. After the pageant winners were crowned, the ducks went on to race down the fountains, not for prizes, but for the coveted Golden Duck Trophy. Each year a new winner proudly displays this trophy. Here are some pics of some of the ducks that were…eh….duck-or-ated:
