Pittsburgh is Just Duckie!

Behold! The large rubber duck has made it’s way to Pittsburgh! It is the first U.S. version of the 40-foot-tall rubber duckie that’s made a splash in harbors from Hong Kong to Sao Paulo since 2007.

Giant duck

Each city builds its own duck from the plans of Dutch artist Florentijn Hofman, and the whole project includes massive pontoons, crews to inflate and deflate the duck, and in this case, alerting organizations such as the Coast Guard and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

Mariners were alerted to the duck’s impending presence, Coast Guard Lt. JG Devin Adams said, because the shipping channel of the Ohio River is one of the nation’s busiest commercial waterways.

“Our job at that point is to alert the maritime community … that there’s going to be a duck there,” Adams said, stifling a chuckle.

Hofman has said the duck has “healing properties” because it knows no frontiers, doesn’t discriminate and doesn’t have a political connotation.

The duck’s arrival (last Friday) kicked off a month long Pittsburgh International Festival of Firsts, which features theater, dance, music and visual arts from around the world. The duck will be moored  downtown until late October.

As part of the celebration, Pittsburgh’s Museum of Cartoon Art is transforming Pittsburgh into Duckburg with its newest exhibition “Duck!” It runs Sept. 27-Oct. 20, at 945 Liberty Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA. It will feature CelebriDucks, which includes Devo Duck, of course! It’s definitely something to see if you live in the Pittsburgh area!

Rockwall Rubber Duck Regatta

Just this past weekend, a rubber duck event of great proportions was held deep in the heart of Texas! The 2nd annual Rockwall Rubber Duck Regatta in Rockwall, Texas was held as a fundraiser benefiting the Boys & Girls Club of Rockwall County and Meals on Wheels of Rockwall County! Thousands of spectators watched 5,000 rubber ducks splash into the fountain at the Harbor in Rockwall and race down towards the finish line. Here are some pictures taken from the race just last weekend! The ducks all began at the top of the triple decker fountain and raced down to the finish line!

The End

There was also a uniquie “duck pageant!” Sponsored by businesses, organizations, and individuals, these ducks were decorated by their owners, then put on display and judged at the Harbor on race day prior to the Corporate Duck Race. After the pageant winners were crowned, the ducks went on to race down the fountains, not for prizes, but for the coveted Golden Duck Trophy. Each year a new winner proudly displays this trophy. Here are some pics of some of the ducks that were…eh….duck-or-ated:

Next Stop-Pittsburgh!

big bird

The people of the city of Pittsburgh are in for a treat. The giant “Rubber Duck” that’s brought joy and elation to Hong Kong is floating over to a harbor in the USA finally! Its 54 foot yellow body will navigate its way to the West End Bridge on September 27, eventually roosting closer to the Sixth Street Bridge where it will remain for the following few weeks.

It’s no secret that the large inflatable bird, an absurd creation that comes to us courtesy of Dutch artist Florentijn Hofman, has caused a bit of a pop culture frenzy. “Countlessduck-themed products have shown up at shops and restaurants. Teenagers are wearing rubber-duck outfits, and tourist kiosks are selling rubber-duck postcards,” writes the New York Times’ Joyce Lau. “Its smiling face was even seen at the Cheung Chau bun festival, a 200-year-old tradition on an outlying island.”

When the balloon sculpture was deflated for maintenance earlier this month, the duck’s temporary demise prompted pure panic (particularly on Twitter), with one disappointed bird fan stating to AFP, “The sky looks like it is crying for me — I took time off from work just to see the duck, now it is just a blob.”

Hofman’s beloved masterpiece was eventually revived, and the world hopped on the gigantic waterfowl wagon once again — even going as far as involving the Rubber Duck in a viral campaign to commemorate Tiananmen Square.

The bird comes to the U.S. courtesy of The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust right in time for the International Festival of Firsts. We can’t wait to see how Pennsylvania responds to duckmania in the months to come!!
